Chole / Indian Chickpeas Curry / Spicy Chickpeas Curry / Spicy Garbanzo Beans Curry

Chickpeas are also known as Kabuli Chana in India. I don't know where the link with Kabul came from but it is called so..and my mother loved to make ghughni with these beauties. But I always loved that spicy Chole Masala Haldiram serves in their joint under the name "chole bhature". You can skip the bhature (a big puffed up puri) if you are in weigh loss project, but you can check out their chole anytime, as it is insanely tasty. They also pour a big spoon of ghee over that before serving, which you can request them not to.

But in Abidjan, Haldiram is a far cry, and even if it were there I would have ignored, because now I always prefer homemade food with a little healthy touch in it. Chickpeas or Garbanzo beans are low in carb and saturated fat, which makes it a real smart choice for anyone who is health conscious. Cook this curry with a little less oil and masala and you will never feel that you are under diet.

Stir Fried Brown Rice

There is a saying in Bengali culture, which goes as " mach'e bhat'e bangali" a.k.a "fish and rice is what it takes to be a Bengali". So when you are born a Bengali, you can never escape rice in your meals. Some even go for rice even in breakfasts. My husband loves to have ghee - bhat (hot rice with clarified butter) in his breakfast with some mashed potato. My sister loves that too. Well...I also sometimes indulge in it too. And I think this is the reason, Bengalis are so chubby..normally.:)

But when you are in diet and trying to loose some weight...rice is the first and foremost thing that you should eliminate from all your meals. Its high in carbs and that is something you must avoid.

Paneer Bhurji / Scrambled Indian Cottage Cheese

Last night I made the most amazing egg curry I have ever eaten till now. Actually it should be second time...but the phrase went so well that I could not force myself to change it. I learnt this recipe from my husbands's aunt in India this year. The first time I ate this curry, I was completely blown away. I mean obviously as a Bengali, I grew up eating eggs but this dish was so "hatke", the flavors were so distinctly amazing that I could not resist but ask the recipe all of a sudden in between their hush hush gossiping. Yes....I can be that interrupting and intimidating, when it comes to anything related to food. Besides, egg curries are super saviors when I don't have fish or meat in my home. So, I had to know.

But there are cases when I don't like to go to the market for weekly grocery shopping and my fridge remains deserted from any edible items...what should I do then?? On those days, I always find a bowl of frozen paneer in my refrigerator and feel rescued.

Working here demands fluency in French, with which I am having a real tough time. Although I can speak a little French, I am horrible in understanding them when someone in front of me is talking in it fluently. The language was the main barrier that I had locked up myself last year. But now, I am a lot more relaxed and curious about the city I live in. I go for marketings, I buy the groceries and vegetables and when I have time I go for long walks. I greet the passing people and breathe in the fresh air. I am kind of growing a liking over it.

Mango Lassi

In Kolkata, Shyambazar is just 10 minutes walk from our house. Its a five point crossing, so it always has its own crowd. On its one side, on one of the footpath, a number of carts are there, selling different kinds of lassis ans fruit juices. Although all the footpaths is Shyambazar is alway heavily crowded, this particular footpath is crowded for a completely different reason, i.e. for the overcrowded stalls. If you are in a hurry or just on your way, walking through that footpath is not an easy task. You will stumble over waiting customers in every 3 seconds.

Chanar Kalia / Indian Cottage Cheese Curry

My mother used to fast on some particular days of the week, like monday, thursday and saturday. So,  naturally meat, fish or egg was not allowed to us on those days, and we, my sister, father and I, who were not observing fasts, had to bear with the fact, that there will be no "macher jhol ~ fish curry" in the lunch menu. Remember Ekta Kapoor's serial of 3 sisters..which was called "Kasamh Se"!!! Back in my teenage years, I used to be a huge fan of that serial. Last week, I noticed this serial is being aired on Zee World channel with
English dubbing. At that time Ekta Kapoor used to rule the silver screen with her serials, all starting with the letter "K". "Kasauti Zindegi ki", "Kahin To Hoga", "Kahani Ghar Ghar Ghar Ki"...and the unforgettable "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi". Phew...!!!!

Watching "Kasamh Se" again, brought back a lot of beautiful memories, the sweet forgotten years of my teenage life. When bubbling with the excitement of the first crush, this serial showed me the shy feeling of falling in love...and a big lot of drama and evilness. :)

Chola Chotpoti / Spicy Black Chickpeas / Masale Chole / Chole Chatpate

In the evening when the school was about to be over...lots of street food vendors used to line up in front of our school from a distance to tempt us with their food. There used to be panipuris / phuchka, ghughni and many more. We, who were accompanied by their guardians were of course not allowed to have them. But those, who used to take school buses or other public transports, used to devour them almost every day. And I had nothing to do but envying them, as I used to hold my mother's hand and took our way to home. The same thing happened in the local railway stations. Many food vendors used to scatter here and there in the platform...and some occasionally gave a loud call to the public drawing the much needed attention to their food.
